Study design
The formulation was characterised in vitro, tested in intestinal epithelial cells exposed to inflammatory stimulation, and evaluated in a dextran-sodium-sulfate mouse colitis model using inflammatory and histological measures.
What the researchers reported
The delivery system released KPV in the colon, reduced selected inflammatory responses in cells and was associated with improved inflammatory and histological measurements in the mouse model compared with DSS-only animals.
What this result does not establish
The result concerns an engineered nanoparticle-hydrogel system, not unformulated KPV. A mouse colitis model cannot establish efficacy or safety in people with inflammatory bowel disease.
