Study design
Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to saline, three BPC-157 dose groups or morphine. Mechanical withdrawal thresholds were measured after incision, and a formalin test was used to examine early and later flinching responses.
What the researchers reported
The BPC-157 groups showed higher mechanical thresholds at selected early measurements and at day four. In the formalin test, flinching decreased during phase one but not phase two. The authors characterised the observed antinociceptive effect as short-lived.
What this result does not establish
This was an animal pain-behaviour experiment, not a human clinical trial. It did not establish a treatment effect, optimal exposure, comparative safety or relevance to human postoperative pain.
